Rifampin is a prescription medication primarily used to treat tuberculosis (TB) and certain bacterial infections. It is available under the brand name Rifadin, and generic versions of rifampin are also available.

Rifampin belongs to the drug class of antibiotics. It is only effective against bacterial infections. It is ineffective as a treatment for viral or fungal infections or infections caused by any other pathogen.

Please note that you will need a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider to obtain this medication.

Rifampin is commonly prescribed for the treatment of the following conditions:

Tuberculosis (TB): Rifampin is a key component in the treatment of tuberculosis, a bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs but can also affect other parts of the body. It is often used in combination with other antibiotics to treat and cure TB effectively.

Certain bacterial infections: Rifampin can also be prescribed to treat various bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and some types of meningitis.

Rifampin belongs to the drug class of antibiotics. It works by inhibiting the growth and replication of bacteria by targeting their RNA (ribonucleic acid) synthesis. This action disrupts the bacterial cell's ability to produce essential proteins, ultimately leading to the death of the bacteria.

While using rifampin, some individuals may experience side effects, although not everyone will.

Mild side effects may include:

  • Upset stomach
  • Heartburn
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Drowsiness
  • Red-orange discoloration of urine, sweat, or tears

More severe side effects are rare but may include:

  • Liver problems (jaundice, dark urine, yellowing of the skin)
  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Difficulty breathing

It's important to promptly report any side effects or concerns to your healthcare provider.

Before starting treatment with rifampin, inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or other medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements, as they may interact with rifampin.

Specifically, discuss any history of:

  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • Porphyria (a genetic enzyme disorder)
  • Alcohol use

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before using rifampin to assess potential risks and benefits.

The recommended dosage of rifampin may vary depending on the specific condition being treated, individual factors, and your healthcare provider's guidance. It is typically taken orally in capsule or tablet form. It should be taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.

For tuberculosis treatment, dosage is based on the patient’s body weight. The maximum dosing regimen involves taking 600 mg of rifampin once daily or as directed by your healthcare provider. The duration of treatment may vary based on the severity of the infection and the specific treatment plan.

Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding dosing and other recommendations for taking rifampin. Do not discontinue or alter your dosage without consulting your doctor, as this can affect the medication's effectiveness and the course of treatment for TB.

Store rifampin as directed by your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Proper storage is essential to maintain the medication's effectiveness. Typically, rifampin should be stored at room temperature, away from excessive heat, light, and moisture.

Keep the medication out of the reach of children and ensure that the container is tightly closed.

Rifampin is available by prescription only. A licensed healthcare provider must authorize the use of this medication.
