Frequently asked questions about sucralfate

Sucralfate is a medication indicated for use as a treatment for ulcers in the small intestine (duodenal ulcers). Duodenal ulcers are a form of peptic ulcer – small sores that develop in the stomach or intestines. The most common cause of these sores is a bacterial infection. This form of ulcer is not caused by stress, spicy foods, or shock.

Duodenal ulcers can cause symptoms such as stomach pain, bloating, heartburn, and nausea. These symptoms may be made worse by fatty foods, alcohol, or smoking.

Sucralfate helps alleviate the symptoms of duodenal ulcers while protecting the sore from further irritation.

Sucralfate is approved for use as a treatment for duodenal ulcers. This medication provides relief from symptoms caused by these intestinal sores, as well as protection against further irritation.
Sucralfate is classified as a protectant medication - meaning that it provides protection against irritation and damaging substances. Sucralfate is used to treat duodenal ulcers (ulcers in the upper part of the lower intestine). It does this by sticking to the tissue around the ulcer site, essentially creating a barrier or coating over the sore. This prevents the ulcer from becoming irritated by enzymes and acids that flow through the digestive system. This action reduces the painful symptoms caused by duodenal ulcers (stomach pain, bloating, nausea), but helps the sore heal more efficiently.

Sucralfate is generally well tolerated and causes few – if any – side effects. About 2% of clinical trials reported symptoms of constipation while taking sucralfate.

Even rarer side effects include:

  • Skin rash
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo

These side effects are very uncommon (reported in less than .5% of clinical trials). If you experience hives, a skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling while taking sucralfate, call your health care provider right away. These are the signs of an allergic reaction to the medication and require medical attention immediately.

As with most prescription medication, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with, as well as any medication/ supplements you are currently taking. In addition, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant. Sucralfate can interact with other forms of medication, causing potentially serious side effects.

Sucralfate is commonly prescribed as an oral tablet, or oral suspension (liquid). For most adults, 1g of sucralfate should be taken up to 4x daily. Take sucralfate on an empty stomach.

Continue to take sucralfate for 4-8 weeks, or until your doctor has determined that your duodenal ulcer has sufficiently healed. As a protective measure, 1g of sucralfate may be prescribed to be taken 2x per day after this course of treatment.

Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of sucralfate without consulting your doctor first. Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

Sucralfate is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
