Triamterene HCTZ is a combination prescription drug used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and edema (swelling/fluid retention) in patients with low levels of potassium in their bodies.

High blood pressure is a dangerous – potentially fatal – condition in which the heart is met with too much resistance from blocked or narrowed arteries as it tries to pump blood and oxygen around your body. When not treated, high blood pressure can lead to an array of serious health issues including heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and many more complications. Nearly half of Americans have high blood pressure, and heart disease is the leading cause of death of people in the United States.

Talk to your doctor about whether triamterene HCTZ may be right for you.

The FDA has approved this medication for the treatment of high blood pressure or edema in patients who develop hypokalemia (extremely low potassium levels) when using HCTZ alone and in patients for whom hypokalemia could be a serious complication (such as patients with a history of heart problems).

Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a thiazide diuretic. It works by stimulating your kidneys to get rid of your body’s excess salt and water via urine (for this reason it is sometimes referred to as a “water pill”). Triamterene is a potassium-sparing diuretic. Sometimes diuretics can cause you to lose valuable electrolytes such as potassium through the increased amount of urine. Triamterene helps to get rid of unwanted salts and water, without losing needed minerals.
