Frequently asked questions about alprostadil

Alprostadil is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring hormone called prostaglandin E1, which helps to relax the blood vessels and promote increased blood flow. It is often prescribed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. Alprostadil is commonly administered as a urethral suppository. This means the medication is inserted via pellets through the urethra. In some cases, alprostadil may be prescribed as an injection to be inserted into the base or side of the penis shortly before sexual activity. Once applied, alprostadil works to increase the flow of blood into the penis, resulting in an erection.

Alprostadil is commonly prescribed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. It is important to note that this medication does not cure ED, nor does it increase sex drive, but it relaxes blood vessels to encourage blood flow to the penis. This action can result in an erection when the patient is sexually stimulated.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition in which you are unable to achieve and maintain an erection firm enough for sexual activity. In some cases, men who experience ED are unable to get an erection at all, while others are unable to get or maintain an erection firm enough for sex. Erectile dysfunction is one of the most common forms of male sexual dysfunction. In fact, ED affects nearly 30 million men worldwide.

Although many people will experience difficulties with their erections from time to time, if it is a frequent and ongoing issue, you should seek help from a medical professional. ED may also be a sign of an underlying health problem or a risk factor for heart disease.

Aside from age, common causes of ED include:

  • Poor vascular health (heart disease, high blood pressure, lack of blood flow)
  • Substance abuse
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Psychological problems (such as depression or anxiety)
  • Peyronie's disease (scar tissue inside the penis)
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Medication usage
Alprostadil belongs to a classification of medications known as vasodilators. These drugs work by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing more blood to flow into it and resulting in an erection. Alprostadil also helps to keep the blood vessels relaxed. The synthetic hormone mimics the natural prostaglandin E1, which plays a role in causing vasodilation – the widening of the arteries and veins. It also helps increase levels of nitric oxide (NO) in the body for improved circulation and relaxation of smooth muscle tissue. This allows for improved erectile function when administered.

Common side effects of alprostadil include burning, pain, and redness at the injection site. In some cases, patients may experience itching, swelling, or a lump at the injection site. Other more uncommon side effects can include dizziness, headaches, nausea and vomiting. Some rare but serious side effects associated with alprostadil include priapism (a prolonged erection lasting more than four hours), tachycardia (abnormally high heart rate), sudden vision loss in one or both eyes, and fainting.

It is important to seek medical help if you experience any of these serious symptoms after using alprostadil. Additionally, it is essential to inform your doctor if you are taking any other medications since they may interact with alprostadil and cause dangerous side effects. For instance, men who use nitrates for chest pain should not take alprostadil as this combination can cause a severe drop in blood pressure.

While most people experience minor discomfort during or shortly after injecting alprostadil into their penis or scrotum--which usually fades after a few minutes--it is important to talk to your doctor if the pain or other symptoms become unbearable or persistent. Furthermore, in rare cases, men may suffer from hypersensitivity reactions such as hives or difficulty breathing which require prompt medical attention.

Alprostadil is commonly administered as a urethral suppository (small pellets containing the medication that are inserted into the penis via the urethra) or injection. Both methods will begin to work within 5-10 minutes after application. It is recommended that you attempt intercourse within 10-30 minutes after taking the medication.

Urethral suppository:

It is recommended that you urinate before inserting the suppository pellet. Leftover urine will help the medication dissolve. Follow your doctor’s orders as to how to insert the medication into the urethra. If you feel any pain or discomfort while administering the medication, withdraw the insertion stem from the urethra and gently try again. Be sure to double-check the delivery device to ensure that the medication was released and inserted into the penis. If you have any questions about the best method to insert the delivery device, or how to get the pellet to dissolve quickly, talk to the prescribing health care provider.

The exact dosage prescribed will depend on the patient and the severity of the condition. In general, one suppository can be inserted into the urethra 10-30 minutes before intercourse. Urethral suppositories should not be used more than once in a 24-hour period.

Do not adjust or increase your dosage without consulting with your health care provider first. Additionally, do not reuse the delivery device. Dispose of the device once it has been used.

Injection:

You will receive your first dose of an alprostadil injection in your health care provider’s office to determine the best dosage for you. After this, you will be trained by your provider as to how to inject the medication yourself. Make sure you understand exactly how to inject this medication, as well as proper storage and handling practices.

Before injecting alprostadil, you must wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water. Wipe the top of the injection bottles and the injection site with an alcohol swab. Do not apply the alcohol swab to the tip of the needle.

The exact dosage prescribed will depend on the patient and the severity of the condition. Take this medication 10-30 minutes before attempting sexual intercourse. Do not use this medication 2 days in a row, or more than 3 times per week.

Do not reuse or share injection needles. Dispose of injection bottles and used needles immediately after use. Follow your doctor’s instructions exactly as directed. If you experience any side effects from an injection, get in touch with a health care provider right away.

Do not increase your dosage of alprostadil without your doctor’s express orders.

Alprostadil is currently only available via prescription. This means that a licensed health care provider must authorize the use of this medication.
