Frequently asked questions about Amethyst

Amethyst is a prescription birth control medication used to prevent pregnancy. It contains the hormones estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and progestin (levonorgestrel), which work together to prevent ovulation and change the lining of the uterus and cervical mucus.

Amethyst is a brand-name birth control medication. It is available under other brand names or in its generic form (as levonorgestrel-ethinyl estradiol).

Amethyst is only available via prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.

Amethyst is a prescription combination birth control medication that is used to prevent pregnancy. It is also sometimes used to treat acne in females who are at least 15 years of age and who have started their menstrual periods and to regulate periods.

Oral contraceptives are not effective at preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), so it is important to use additional forms of contraception to avoid their transmission.

This medication has been given a black box warning from the FDA due to the risks of smoking cigarettes while using it. Doing so increases your risk of heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, and other side effects from taking oral contraceptives, especially for heavy smokers over the age of 35. Do not smoke cigarettes if you are taking oral contraceptives such as Amethyst. Additionally, the patch formulation of this medication is contraindicated in women whose BMI is greater than 30 due to decreased effectiveness and an increased risk of clots.

Amethyst works to prevent pregnancy in several ways.

First, ethinyl estradiol, a synthetic form of estrogen, suppresses the release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation). Without ovulation, there is no egg available for fertilization by sperm, significantly reducing the chances of pregnancy.

Additionally, levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin, thickens the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to penetrate and reach the egg. This thickened cervical mucus also impedes the sperm's ability to move through the reproductive tract.

Furthermore, levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol alters the uterine lining, making it less receptive to implantation, thereby preventing a fertilized egg (zygote) from attaching to the uterus. In combination, these actions make it highly effective at preventing pregnancy when taken as directed, offering a reliable method of contraception for those who use it consistently and correctly.

The use of prescription birth control methods like Amethyst has been shown to cause some side effects. These are generally mild and go away within a few days. Talk to your healthcare provider if they persist or become more severe.

Common and mild side effects of Amethyst use include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach cramps or bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Breast tenderness
  • Acne
  • Bleeding or spotting between menstrual periods
  • Changes in menstrual flow
  • Weight gain
  • Headaches
  • Mood changes
  • Decreased libido

More severe side effects are rare but may include severe headache, vomiting, speech difficulties, dizziness or fainting, limb weakness or numbness, crushing chest pain, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, leg pain, vision loss, double vision, bulging eyes, severe stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, appetite loss, extreme fatigue, fever, dark urine, pale stools, hand/foot/ankle swelling, depression with sleep problems, unusual bleeding, rash, or unusually heavy and prolonged menstrual bleeding.

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you begin to notice any of these symptoms.

Before taking with Amethyst, inform your doctor of any medical conditions you are currently managing and disclose any medications, prescription drugs, or supplements you are taking. Amethyst can interact with certain substances in the body, potentially causing adverse reactions.

Specifically, mention any history of:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Blood clots
  • An irregular heartbeat
  • Depression
  • Seizures
  • Migraine headaches
  • Diabetes
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Breast cancer (including family history of breast cancer)
  • Fibrocystic breast disease

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before using Amethyst to assess potential risks and benefits.

Amethyst comes in the form of a tablet to take by mouth. Oral contraceptives typically are prescribed in packets of 21, 28, or 91 tablets and are usually taken once per day at the same time of day. However, you should take the medication exactly as your healthcare provider prescribes. Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of Amethyst without consulting with your provider first. If you begin to experience adverse side effects while taking this medication, like those listed above, inform your provider right away.

If you miss a dose of Amethyst, you should follow the instructions on the packaging of your birth control and use a backup method of birth control for 7 to 9 days or until the end of the cycle.

Store Amethyst as directed by your health care provider or pharmacist. Proper storage is essential to maintain the medication's effectiveness. Typically, it should be stored at room temperature, away from excessive heat, light, and moisture.

Keep the medication out of the reach of children and ensure that the container is tightly closed.

Amethyst is currently only available with a prescription. A licensed healthcare provider must authorize the use of this medication.
