Ciclopirox is a topical prescription antifungal medication that is used to treat fungal infections of the fingernails, toenails, and skin. It can also be prescribed to treat seborrheic dermatitis in the form of shampoo. It works by disrupting the cell membrane of the fungus, which prevents it from growing and multiplying. Ciclopirox is generally well tolerated, with few side effects. The most common side effects include skin irritation, redness, and itching. Ciclopirox should not be used on open wounds or on broken skin.

Ciclopirox is currently available under the brand name Penlac. It comes in the form of a topical solution that is applied like nail polish to the toenails and fingernails but can also be prescribed for other fungal infections and seborrheic dermatitis in the form of a cream/gel or shampoo.

Ciclopirox topical solution is applied to the nails (like nail polish) to treat ringworm of the fingernails and toenails (tinea unguium), an infection that can cause nail discoloration, splitting and pain.

Ciclopirox is in a class of medications called antifungals. It is what is known as a substituted pyridone antimycotic, which works by killing the fungal infection or stopping its growth. It is not effective against bacterial or viral infections like UTIs or the flu.

Common side effects of ciclopirox can include redness at the application site. If you notice burning, blistering, or swelling at the application site, or a change in the color or shape of your nails, stop taking ciclopirox and call your healthcare provider.

This is not a complete list of adverse effects, so be sure to seek medical attention if you experience any other unusual symptoms or problems while using ciclopirox.

Be sure to inform the prescribing doctor or health care professional about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with, as well as any medication/ supplements you are currently taking before starting treatment with ciclopirox. Be sure to mention if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the ciclopirox topical solution.

Consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant before taking ciclopirox.

The dosing for topical ciclopirox can differ depending on your diagnosis and the form of ciclopirox that you are using. Your doctor will give you the proper dosage for the medication based on these factors. As a reference, the typical application is as follows:

Apply ciclopirox topical solution to your nails and the skin immediately surrounding and under your nails, once a day (bedtime is typically the best time to do this to avoid moisture and ensure that solution doesn’t get washed away during every-day activities like dish-washing, hand-washing, showering, or swimming). You should also trim your nails as directed by your doctor, and avoid using nail polish or other products on your nails. Children’s dosage should be determined by a doctor.

Ciclopirox should not be used on open wounds or on broken skin. Continue to apply your ciclopirox until the treatment is complete, even if your infection has cleared up. If you stop treatment before it is over, the infection can return.

Ciclopirox should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, away from extreme heat, extreme cold, moisture, and direct light, and keep it out of the reach of children.

No, Ciclopirox is available only with your doctor's prescription.
