Clotrimazole is a prescription and over-the-counter antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections of the skin, nails, and mouth such as ringworm and athlete’s foot. It is in a class of antifungal medications called imidazoles that work by blocking the growth and spread of fungi. Common side effects include redness, itching, swelling, burning, or stinging sensation.

Clotrimazole is currently available under the brand name Lotrimin. It comes in the form of a cream and a liquid to apply to the skin.

Clotrimazole is used to treat fungal infections of the skin, nails, and mouth, including ringworm (tinea corporis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and athlete’s foot (tinea pedis). It can also be used to treat yeast infections of the skin as well as tinea versicolor, a fungal infection that causes brown or light-colored spots on the chest, back, arms, legs, or neck.

Good news! If deemed clinically appropriate, providers on Sesame can write a prescription for clotrimazole to be picked up near you – often within the same day! Simply talk to a clinician and get your online doctor prescription or refill ordered right away for fast and convenient pickup from a pharmacy of your choice.

Note that all prescriptions are at the discretion of your healthcare provider.

Clotrimazole is in a class of antifungal medications called imidazoles that work by blocking the growth and spread of fungi. Clotrimazole is effective because it blocks fungal cells from making ergosterol, a compound that fungi cell membranes need to survive. Without ergosterol, the fungi cell membrane structure is weakened, and cannot grow.

Common side effects of clotrimazole can include irritated or red skin, or a burning or itching feeling when you apply it. If these side effects do not go away, or if you experience blistering, swelling, peeling, hives, or skin cracks, stop taking clotrimazole and call your healthcare provider.

This is not a complete list of adverse effects, although these are among the most common. Seek medical attention if you experience any unusual symptoms or problems while using clotrimazole.

Be sure to inform the prescribing doctor or health care professional about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with, as well as any medication/ supplements you are currently taking before starting treatment with clotrimazole. Be sure to mention if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in clotrimazole cream or liquid.

Consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant before taking clotrimazole.

The dosing for clotrimazole can differ depending on your age and diagnosis. If your dosage of clotrimazole is different from the information below, do not change it unless told to do so by a doctor.

For topical forms of clotrimazole (cream and liquid), adults and children should apply the clotrimazole to the affected area as advised by your healthcare provider. Be sure to cover the entire affected area and rub in the cream or liquid gently. Do not use an airtight covering over the medicine to avoid irritating your skin.

Continue to apply your clotrimazole until the treatment is complete, even if your infection has cleared up. If you stop treatment before it is over, the infection can return.

Clotrimazole should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, away from extreme heat, extreme cold, moisture, and direct light, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Yes, clotrimazole is currently available over-the-counter and via prescription. This means it is widely available for purchase at most retail health stores without a prescription from a doctor, but a doctor will be able to give you a stronger dose via prescription.
