Frequently asked questions about enalapril-HCTZ

Enalapril-HCTZ is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure. A combination of two separate medicines - enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide - helps relax blood vessels, improve blood flow to the heart, and increases the flow of urine from the body. Excess fluid, and salt in urine, can cause increased blood pressure. Water pills encourage the body to get rid of this extra salt and fluid by urinating more frequently.

High blood pressure is a common but serious condition that affects nearly half of all Americans, according to the CDC. If left untreated, high blood pressure can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of the body. This can lead to adverse events like heart disease, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and more.

While enalapril-HCTZ has been shown to effectively reduce blood pressure, it should be taken along with lifestyle changes to help reduce risk of hypertension (high blood pressure). Lifestyle changes that can help lower blood pressure and improve heart health include: Quit smoking Eating a healthy diet Regular physical activity Drinking alcohol in moderation

Enalapril-HCTZ is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). By lowering your blood pressure, enalapril-HCTZ helps reduce your risk of heart failure, heart attack, organ damage, and stroke.

Enalapril-HCTZ is a combination of two medications - enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide.

Enalapril belongs to a class of medication known as ACE inhibitors (angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors), which are commonly used to treat hypertension. ACE inhibitors reduce the levels of a chemical in your body that can cause blood vessels to narrow and blood pressure to rise. By blocking the production of natural chemical, Enalapril can help relax and dilate blood vessels, improve blood and oxygen flow to the heart, and lower your blood pressure.

The other component of enalapril-HCTZ is hydrochlorothiazide. This medication is what’s known as a diuretic, or “water pill”. These medications are commonly used to treat edema or excess fluid retention in the body, by increasing the flow of urine from the body, which can contain blood-pressure raising sodium.

Working together, this combination drug both increases blood flow, and carries excess fluid from the body. This has been shown to effectively lower blood pressure and decrease risk of heart problems, especially when taken along with certain lifestyle changes (like a change in diet and regular exercise).

While enalapril-HCTZ may cause some side effects, it is important to remember that your doctor prescribed this drug because it can help lower blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart problems and organ damage. Common side effects that may occur while taking enalapril-HCTZ include:

  • Dizziness or faintness
  • Headache
  • Drowsiness
  • Muscle pain or cramping
  • Coughing
  • Decrease in sexual performance/ ability

More serious side effects include:

  • Angioedema (swelling in the face or extremities)
  • Persistent sores
  • Blurred vision
  • Chest pain
  • vomiting

If you experience any serious side effects while taking enalapril-HCTZ, call your doctor right away. Be sure to tell your doctor about any medication you are taking before starting treatment with enalapril-HCTZ, as it may interact with other drugs and cause an adverse reaction. Finally, let your doctor know about any medical conditions you may have before starting treatment with enalapril-HCTZ.

Enalapril-HCTZ will start to work within an hour or so after it is taken. It may take 4-6 hours before the drug is fully absorbed in the body, and a few weeks before effects (such as consistently lower blood pressure) can be observed.

Your doctor will likely start you at a combination dose of 10-40 mg of enalapril and 12.5-50 mg of hydrochlorothiazide in an oral tablet form, meant to be taken once or twice a day. A common starting dose of enalapril-HCTZ is 10 mg of Enalapril and 25 mg of HCTZ. Your doctor may increase your dosage if needed.

Tell your doctor about any medication you are taking before starting treatment with enalapril-HCTZ. You should also be sure to only take the dosage directed by your doctor. Do not increase your dose, or stop taking enalapril-HCTZ without speaking to your doctor first.
