What is lisinopril-HCTZ?

What is lisinopril-HCTZ used to treat?
Lisinopril-HCTZ is used to treat high blood pressure. High blood pressure is a common but serious disease. When not treated, it can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, heart attacks, kidney failure, loss of vision, strokes, and more.
This medication may also be prescribed for other uses. Talk to your doctor to find out if Lisinopril-HCTZ is right for you.
How does lisinopril-HCTZ work?
Lisinopril belongs to a group of drugs known as ACE inhibitors (“ACE” stands for Angiotensin-converting-enzyme). ACE inhibitors help your blood vessels relax and expand by blocking a certain chemical (angiotensin II) known to restrict them. This lowers your blood pressure and makes it easier for your heart to pump blood and oxygen around your body.
Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to a family of drugs known as thiazide diuretics, which are sometimes also known as “water pills.” These medicines work by stimulating your kidneys to get rid of your body’s excess salt and water via urine.
What are the most common side effects of lisinopril-HCTZ?
It is important to note that if the doctor has prescribed you lisinopril-HCTZ it is because they believe its benefits to you outweigh the risks. Many people who take lisinopril-HCTZ have no side effects or only minor ones. However, adverse effects sometimes do occur.
The most common side effects include:
A dry, tickly cough
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Headaches
Diarrhea or nausea
Fatigue
Decrease in sexual ability

Fainting
Decrease in vision or eye pain
Changes in your heartbeat
Increased/ decreased urine volume
Skin rash

Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or are taking any other medications.
Please note that this is not a complete list of all possible adverse reactions or precautions. For more information please visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage for lisinopril-HCTZ.
How long does it take for lisinopril-HCTZ to work?
You can expect noticeable improvements to your blood pressure after about two weeks of taking it. However, it can take two to four weeks before you experience the full benefit of lisinopril-HCTZ.
You should continue to take lisinopril-HCTZ even if you feel well. High blood pressure often doesn’t have any noticeable symptoms. While this medication is effective at controlling your blood pressure, it does not cure it. Talk to your doctor if you want to discontinue using lisinopril-HCTZ.
What is the typical starting dose of lisinopril-HCTZ?
Doctors usually prescribe lisinopril-HCTZ if therapy with either lisinopril or hydrochlorothiazide alone has not yielded the desired results or if a higher monotherapy dose of either medication resulted in adverse effects (most commonly a potassium deficiency because of the diuretic properties of hydrochlorothiazide).
The dose prescribed to you will be individualized to your needs based on how your body has reacted to the monotherapy and several other factors. A typical starting dose, however, is 10 to 20 mg of lisinopril and 12.5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide.
Take lisinopril-HCTZ only as instructed by your doctor. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
