Lisinopril (generic Prinivil)

  • What is lisinopril?
Lisinopril is a prescription drug used to treat high blood pressure, heart failure, and kidney disease. It is also often administered to patients within 24 hours after a heart attack to improve recovery rates and outcomes.

Almost half of all Americans have high blood pressure, a serious condition that can place you at greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Talk to your doctor about whether lisinopril is right for you.

  • What are common side effects of lisinopril?
While adverse reactions to lisinopril are rare, some patients who take the drug may experience mild side effects, including headache, dizziness, and dry cough.

Rare, more serious adverse events have been known to occur, including hypotension, creatinine increase, hyperkalemia, syncope, persistent nausea and vomiting, yellowing of the eyes and skin, and dark urine. If you are concerned that lisinopril is causing you to experience side effects, contact your doctor. Lisinopril can cause life-threatening swelling of the lips, tongue and throat (angioedema). Frequently asked questions about lisinopril

What is lisinopril?

Lisinopril is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and heart attacks (myocardial infarction). Lisinopril is part of a family of drugs known as ACE inhibitors, which prompt blood vessels to relax and expand, lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Almost half of all Americans have high blood pressure, a condition when the blood flowing through your body pushes too hard against the walls of your veins. This can lead to an array of adverse heart problems.

What is lisinopril used to treat?

The good news is that high blood pressure is as treatable as it is common. Lisinopril (generic for the brand name Prinivil) is a medication that doctors commonly prescribe to manage high blood pressure in patients.

Lisinopril is also effective in treating acute myocardial infarction, more commonly known as a heart attack. By reducing blood pressure, it can help increase your odds of survival and recovery in the hours and days after you suffer a heart attack.

It should be noted that medication alone is not sufficient to fully bring high blood pressure under control. Drugs like lisinopril work best when combined with diet, exercise, and smoking cessation.

How does lisinopril work?

Lisinopril belongs to a group of drugs known as ACE inhibitors (“ACE” stands for Angiotensin-converting-enzyme). ACE inhibitors work by reducing enzymes that cause high blood pressure. To get into the science of it, ACE inhibitors reduce angiotensin II, a chemical that tightens blood vessels, while simultaneously increase bradykinin, a good chemical that helps your blood vessels expand. This combined effect helps to both relax and expand blood vessels and decrease your body’s overall volume of blood, leading to lower blood pressure and a more modest demand on your heart.

What are the most common side effects of lisinopril?

While you may experience some common side effects while taking lisinopril, it is important to remember that your doctor prescribed this medication because its benefits - bringing your blood pressure back under control - outweigh its side effects.

However, you may still experience some adverse effects. Common side effects for patients taking lisinopril for high blood pressure include:

Headache Dizziness Cough

More serious side effects of lisinopril may include:

Hypotension Creatinine increase Hyperkalemia (high blood potassium) Syncope Persistent nausea and vomiting Yellowing of the eyes and skin Dark urine

If you believe you are experiencing serious side effects of lisinopril, contact your doctor immediately.

This is not a complete list of side effects associated with lisinopril. For more information on adverse effects you may experience, visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage.

How long does it take for lisinopril to work?

Lisinopril, like most ACE inhibitors, takes some time to work. While it begins its work of lowering blood pressure as soon as it is ingested into the body, lisinopril may take a few weeks to come into full effect. It is important to discuss with your doctor how long you should take lisinopril.

What is the typical starting dose of lisinopril?

If you have been prescribed lisinopril for hypertension, your doctor will likely start you at a once-daily dose of 10 mg. The usual dosage of lisinopril is 20-40 mg, taken once per day in a single dose. Your doctor will adjust your dosage in accordance with your blood pressure. If you are currently taking diuretics, your doctor may recommend a starting dose of 5 mg per day.

If you have been prescribed lisinopril for heart failure, your doctor will likely start you at a daily dosage of 5 mg.

If you have experienced a heart attack and are in stable condition, your doctor may administer 5 mg of lisinopril orally, followed by another 5 mg after 24 hours, and 10 mg dose after 48 hours. After passing the 48-hour mark, 10 mg of lisinopril should be taken every day for the next six weeks.
