What is molnupiravir?

Molnupiravir is an antiviral medication used to treat COVID-19 infections in certain adult patients who have mild to moderate symptoms and are at high risk for severe illness.

What conditions does molnupiravir treat?

Molnupiravir is prescribed as a treatment for mild to moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections in patients who may be at risk for developing a serious illness. It is only prescribed to patients who have received a positive test for COVID-19. This medication is not indicated for use as a prophylactic (preventative) against the disease. It is not a substitute for vaccination against COVID-19.

How does molnupiravir work?

Molnupiravir belongs to a classification of medications known as antivirals. This medication works by inhibiting the ability of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to replicate. The more the virus can replicate, the more dangerous and infectious it becomes. By blocking this action, molnupiravir keeps the infection under control in the host body while reducing its infectiousness.

How do I take molnupiravir?

Molnupiravir is available as an oral tablet to be taken by mouth.

How long until I feel better?

Molnupiravir starts working very quickly after you start taking it.

The time it takes to note the effects of molnupiravir will vary depending on the patient and the severity of the condition being treated. Most patients start feeling better within a few days after starting use. In the case of a severe infection, it may take longer before you feel better.

If you have been taking molnupiravir for several days and aren't feeling better, talk to your healthcare provider. Do not increase your dosage. If you are feeling better, do not stop using molnupiravir until your provider directs you to do so.

Providers will prescribe molnupiravir treatment for 5 days.

Are there other uses for molnupiravir?

Molnupiravir is under emergency authorization for the treatment of COVID-19 in certain adult patients. It is not approved for use in other viral infections or conditions.
