Frequently asked questions about molnupiravir

Molnupiravir is a prescription medication used for the treatment of mild to moderate coronavirus (COVID-19) infections in patients who may be at risk for developing a serious illness. This medication is currently available to adult patients who have tested positive for COVID-19, and who are at risk of experiencing a progression of the infection that may result in hospitalization or death. It does not prevent COVID-19 infections, nor is it a substitute for vaccination against the COVID-19 virus.

Molnupiravir is not recommended for patients under the age of 18.

Molnupiravir is prescribed as a treatment for mild to moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections in patients who may be at risk for developing a serious illness. It is only prescribed to patients who have received a positive test for COVID-19. This medication is not indicated for use as a prophylactic (preventative) against the disease. It is not a substitute for vaccination against COVID-19.

COVID-19 is a viral disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It is highly contagious and may cause serious complications, hospitalization, and death in certain patients.

People with COVID experience a range of symptoms, including:

  • Fever or chills
  • Body aches
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue

Molnupiravir is currently only approved for use in adults over the age of 18 who are at high risk of developing serious complications caused by COVID-19.

Molnupiravir belongs to a classification of medications known as antivirals. This medication works by inhibiting the ability of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to replicate. The more the virus can replicate, the more dangerous and infectious it becomes. By blocking this action, molnupiravir keeps the infection under control in the host body, while reducing its infectiousness.

Molnupiravir has been shown to cause some side effects. Talk to your health care provider if these adverse reactions become severe or do not go away within a few days.

Common side effects reported from molnupiravir use include:

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

This is not a complete list of all possible side effects caused by molnupiravir. If you experience any severe symptoms or signs of an allergic reaction (like shortness of breath, skin rash, or chest pain) contact your doctor immediately.

Molnupiravir may alter bone and cartilage development in children under the age of 18. Because of this, molnupiravir is only authorized for use in patients 18 years of age or older.

As with all prescription medications, inform your prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have and any medications and supplements you are currently taking before starting treatment with molnupiravir. Molnupiravir can interact with other forms of medication and substances, leading to potentially serious side effects.

Be sure to inform your doctor if you are pregnant before starting treatment with molnupiravir. Talk to your health care provider immediately if you become pregnant or plan to become pregnant while taking molnupiravir. Additionally, if you are sexually active with a partner who may become pregnant, alert your healthcare provider. Molnupiravir may affect sperm and subsequent pregnancies for several months following administration.

Molnupiravir is supplied as an oral capsule. The preliminary dosage of molnupiravir usually starts at 4 capsules to be taken every 12 hours for 5 days. This dosage may be adjusted depending on your age, medical history, and the severity of the infection.

Do not crush or chew molnupiravir capsules. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Molnupiravir can be taken with or without food.

Molnupiravir should be prescribed and taken within 5 days of the onset of COVID-19 symptoms.

Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of molnupiravir without consulting your doctor first. Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

Molnupiravir is currently only available via prescription. This means that a licensed health care provider must authorize the use of this drug.
