Nitrofurantoin (generic of Macrobid) is a prescription medication used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Uncomplicated urinary tract infections are very common, especially for women. They occur when bacteria enters the urethra and infects the urinary tract. Symptoms of a UTI can include: pain while peeing, frequent need to pee, feeling the need to pee despite having an empty bladder and pressure in the lower abdomen. An uncomplicated UTI is one that occurs in a healthy, non-pregnant, non-menopausal female patient.

Talk to your doctor about whether nitrofurantoin is right for you.

Nitrofurantoin is used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections. Nitrofurantoin should treat the symptoms associated with an uncomplicated UTI and cure the infection.
Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic. Nitrofurantoin works by interfering with the vital processes (formation of cell walls, DNA and RNA synthesis) in bacteria that keep them alive. Without these vital processes, the bacteria die. Nitrofurantoin is also bactericidal in urine, meaning it kills infection-causing bacteria that can be present in urine. Nitrofurantoin is specific to the bacteria that cause UTIs and therefore should only be taken for those infections.

While adverse reactions to nitrofurantoin are uncommon, some patients who take the drug may experience mild side effects, including:

  • dark yellow or brown urine
  • Nausea
  • headache
  • vomiting
  • loss of appetite

If any of the side effects above are severe or do not go away, you should contact your doctor. Rare, more serious adverse effects may occur. If you experience any symptoms listed below, contact your doctor right away. Serious side effects from taking nitrofurantoin include:

  • difficulty breathing
  • excessive tiredness
  • fever or chills
  • chest pain
  • numbness, tingling, or pinprick sensation in the fingers and toes
  • swelling of the lips or tongue

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking nitrofurantoin, as it can make side effects worse.

Most people will begin to feel better after the first 1-2 days of taking nitrofurantoin. Because nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic, it is important to finish the prescription given to you, even if you feel better. If you stop taking nitrofurantoin too soon, your infection may become more difficult to treat and could even become resistant to antibiotics.
Most doctors prescribe 100 mg of nitrofurantoin every 12 hours for 7 days. Nitrofurantoin should be taken with food and water.

Nitrofurantoin is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
