Frequently asked questions about Rizatriptan

Rizatriptan is a prescription medication used to treat migraine headaches.

Migraines are severe headaches that are usually accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to sound and light, and numbness or tingling. According to the American Migraine Foundation, more than 36 million people in the U.S. suffer from migraines, which can sometimes be debilitating.

Whether you’re passionate about going for hikes, cooking new recipes, or playing with your grandchildren, don’t let migraines keep you from doing the things you love to do. Medications like rizatriptan can help control and manage your migraine symptoms - ensuring you spend less time recovering on the couch and more time enjoying the world.

Rizatriptan is prescribed to treat migraines, severe headaches accompanied by throbbing pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Rizatriptan belongs to a family of drugs known as selective serotonin receptor agonists. In simpler terms, these are drugs that narrow the blood vessels in your brain, preventing the brain from receiving pain signals and blocking the release of natural substances that cause pain, nausea, and many of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with migraines.

While there are some common side effects associated with rizatriptan, it is important to remember that your doctor prescribed this medication because its ability to keep your migraines under control outweighs any adverse side effects it may cause.

There are, however, some common side effects associated with rizatriptan. These may include:

Fatigue Asthenia (abnormal physical weakness) Somnolence Pain/pressure sensation
Dizziness

While these side effects are common, you should contact your doctor if they persist or are severe.

Rare but serious side effects, according to the National Institutes of Health, may include the following:

Tightness, pain, pressure, or heaviness in the chest, throat, neck, or jaw Rapid, pounding, or irregular heartbeat Shortness of breath Breaking out in a cold sweat Lightheadedness Slow or difficult speech Weakness or numbness of an arm or leg Sudden or severe stomach pain Bloody diarrhea Paleness or blue color of the fingers and toes Pain, burning, or tingling in the hands or feet Difficulty breathing or swallowing Swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs Rash Itching Changes in vision

Contact your doctor if you experience any of these side effects.

It usually takes about 30 minutes for rizatriptan to begin to alleviate your migraine symptoms. Rizatriptan is most effective when taken as soon as you begin to feel a migraine.

The recommended dose of rizatriptan for adults is 5 to 10 mg. Repeat doses should be separated by at least 2 hours, and no more than 30 mg should be taken in a day. Pediatric patients who weigh under 88 pounds (40 kg) should take a single dose of 5 mg; those over 88 pounds should take a single dose of 10 mg.

Rizatriptan is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
