Frequently asked questions about Sumatriptan

Sumatriptan is a prescription medication used to treat migraine headaches.

Migraines are severe headaches that are usually accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to sound and light, and numbness or tingling. According to the American Migraine Foundation, more than 36 million people in the U.S. suffer from migraines, which can sometimes be debilitating.

Whether you’re passionate about going for hikes, cooking new recipes, or playing with your grandchildren, don’t let migraines keep you from doing the things you love to do. Medications like sumatriptan can help control and manage your migraine symptoms - ensuring you spend less time recovering on the couch and more time enjoying the world.

Sumatriptan is used to treat migraines. It is generally used to treat acute migraines - those that come on suddenly - as opposed to chronic migraines. It is not used to treat other kinds of headaches, like cluster headaches.

Sumatriptan belongs to a family of drugs known as selective serotonin receptor agonists. In simpler terms, these drugs narrow the blood vessels in your brain, preventing the brain from receiving pain signals and blocking the release of natural substances that cause pain, nausea, and many of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with migraines.

While adverse reactions to sumatriptan are uncommon, some patients who take the drug may experience mild side effects, including paresthesia, pressure, chest pain, neck pain, vertigo, or malaise.

Rare, more serious adverse events have also been known to occur. If you are concerned that sumatriptan may be causing you to experience any number of adverse side effects, please contact your doctor or clinician.

Sumatriptan can help quickly alleviate acute migraines. It usually takes 30 to 60 minutes to reach full strength.

Sumatriptan is usually taken in doses of 25, 50 or 100 mg. Larger doses are more effective but carry a greater risk of adverse reactions. If your migraine has not improved within 2 hours of taking sumatriptan, you may consider taking another dose. Please note, though, that your maximum daily dose of sumatriptan should not exceed 200 mg.

Talk to your doctor about the optimal dose to meet your needs.

Sumatriptan is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
