Trihexyphenidyl is a prescription drug that relaxes the muscles in the body. It is often used to treat conditions like Parkinson’s disease and to control tremors and slurred speech.

Looking for a safe, effective way to manage symptoms of Parkinson’s disease or tremors? Talk to your doctor about whether Trihexyphenidyl is right for you.

Trihexyphenidyl is used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. It may also be prescribed to offset the side effects of another drug; namely, if another antipsychotic is causing you to experience involuntary movements in your body, your doctor might recommend that you take Trihexyphenidyl to help control those movements.

Trihexyphenidyl works by relaxing muscles and the nerve impulses that control muscles. Trihexyphenidyl is an anticholinergic, which means that it blocks a natural substance in the brain called acetylcholine. By blocking acetylcholine, Trihexyphenidyl helps stabilize the bodily functions affected by Parkinson’s disease, including sweating, muscle stiffness, the production of saliva, and the ability to walk.

If you are prescribed Trihexyphenidyl to treat the side effects of an antipsychotic, the drug can prevent muscle spasms in your back, neck, and eyes. It can also decrease muscle stiffness.

While adverse reactions to trihexyphenidyl are uncommon, some patients who take the drug may experience mild side effects, including difficulty urinating, upset stomach, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, vomiting, headache, and constipation.

Less common but more serious side effects should be reported to your doctor immediately. Contact your doctor right away if you experience any of the following:

  • Fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeat
  • Delusions or hallucinations
  • Confusion
  • Fever
  • Rash

Notify your doctor if your side effects become unmanageable. There may be additional side effects of taking Trihexyphenidyl. You should speak to your doctor about the risks of taking Trihexyphenidyl before beginning a prescription.

This is not a complete list of side effects. For more information, please visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage.

Trihexyphenidyl begins to work within a few hours. If you do not begin to feel relief in that time, your doctor may increase your dosage or recommend an alternative medication.
The typical starting dose of Trihexyphenidyl is 1 mg per day. Your doctor may increase your dosage gradually. Your individualized dosage - including the number of milligrams, frequency of doses, and if you take the medication with or without food - should be decided by you and your doctor together.

Trihexyphenidyl is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
