Frequently asked questions about Buspar

Buspar is a brand-name prescription anti-anxiety medication. It is commonly used to treat anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder, and depression. It can also be used to treat schizophrenia and alcohol withdrawal.

Buspar is prescribed to treat clinically diagnosed anxiety disorders and other mental health conditions. It is not used to reduce everyday stress or anxiety. In addition, it may be prescribed in conjunction with other treatment options like therapy or lifestyle changes.

Buspar is often prescribed to treat anxiety disorder, which causes people to feel intensely and persistently worried and anxious. A person who suffers from anxiety disorder may have constant feelings of worry, difficulty concentrating, and an inability to relax. If left untreated, anxiety may eventually interfere with work or school performance, personal relationships, and other daily functions.

Buspar can also be used to treat panic disorder, characterized by the sudden onset of intense feelings of fear, usually lasting 20 to 30 minutes. It can also treat post-traumatic stress disorder, including flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety.

Buspirone may additionally be used to treat depression and schizophrenia.

While it is not fully understood how buspirone helps alleviate anxiety, researchers believe Buspar works by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter (a chemical used to communicate information to the brain) that regulates mood, appetite, and sleep. By increasing the amount of serotonin in your brain, Buspar is believed to alleviate anxiety symptoms.

Buspar has been shown to cause some side effects. Talk to your health care provider if these mild reactions do not go away within a few days.
