Clonidine tablets are prescribed in conjunction with other medication and lifestyle changes to treat high blood pressure.
High blood pressure is a dangerous – potentially fatal – condition in which the heart is met with too much resistance from blocked or narrowed arteries as it tries to pump blood and oxygen around your body. When not treated, high blood pressure can lead to an array of serious health issues including heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and many more complications. Nearly ½ of Americans have high blood pressure, and heart disease is the leading cause of death of people in the United States.
It is important to note that clonidine does not cure high blood pressure. Instead, it acts in conjunction with other forms of treatment to get blood pressure under control.
In addition to its use as a treatment for high blood pressure, extended-release clonidine tablets may be prescribed as a treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. ADHD is a mental health disorder that can cause several persistent problems, such as inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. When ADHD isn’t properly managed it can create a range of problems such as poor performance in work or school, relationship problems, and lowered self-esteem.
As a treatment for ADHD, clonidine is prescribed as one part of a comprehensive training plan that includes social, behavioral, and education therapy along with medication. Clonidine is not a cure for ADHD, but helps reduce symptoms in patients managing the condition.
