You may experience mild side effects while using a contraceptive device like NuvaRing. Talk to your doctor if these reactions become severe or do not go away within a few days.
Common symptoms reported while using NuvaRing include:
- Swelling or irritation of the vagina
- Breast tenderness
- Headaches
- Change in menstruation
- Bloating
- Weight changes
- Acne
- Diarrhea
- Mood changes
- Vaginal discharge
- Decrease in sexual desire
This is not a complete list of adverse reactions. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience leg pain, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, chest pain, vision problems, shortness of breath, dizziness, yellowing skin or eyes, or other severe symptoms while using NuvaRing.
Hormonal birth control can increase your risk of blood clots. Those with additional risk factors—individuals over 35, those with obesity, or smokers—are at even greater risk of blood clots.
As with all prescription medications, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with and any medications or supplements you currently take before using NuvaRing. The hormones in NuvaRing can interact with other forms of medication, causing potentially serious side effects. In addition, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant before starting treatment with this medication.
