Betaxolol is a prescription beta-blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), chest pain, and other conditions related to the heart and circulation. It works by blocking certain hormones, which causes your heart and blood vessels to relax and pump blood more slowly. This causes blood flow to improve and decreases your blood pressure. Common side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, diarrhea, or tiredness.

Although the brand name for betaxolol, Kerlone, has been discontinued in the U.S., generic forms are still available and are prescribed in the form of an oral tablet. Betaxolol eye drops can also be used to treat ocular hypertension and primary open angle glaucoma.

Betaxolol is used to treat high blood pressure, chest pain, and other conditions related to the heart and circulation. It is important to note that betaxolol can only control high blood pressure, not cure it.

High blood pressure can damage vital organs, including the heart, brain, and kidneys. Damage to these organs can lead to serious health problems, such as heart attacks, vision loss, or strokes, so proper management of hypertension is critical. It is typically suggested that betaxolol be used along with other lifestyle changes such as a low-fat, low-sodium diet and exercise in order to keep your blood pressure under control.

Good news! If deemed clinically appropriate, providers on Sesame can write a prescription for betaxolol to be picked up near you – often within the same day! Simply talk to a clinician and get your online doctor prescription or refill ordered right away for fast and convenient pickup from a pharmacy of your choice.

Note that all prescriptions are at the discretion of your healthcare provider.

Betaxolol belongs to a class of medications that are known as beta-blockers. It works by blocking certain hormones (such as epinephrine) that can cause the heart and other parts of the body to work harder. As a result, your blood vessels relax and your heart beats slower and decreases your blood pressure, which increases the amount of blood and oxygen getting to your heart.

Common side effects of betaxolol include:

  • extreme tiredness
  • difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • unusual dreams
  • heartburn
  • nausea
  • diarrhea
  • joint pain
  • decreased sexual ability in men
  • cold hands and feet
  • numbness, burning or tingling in the arms, legs, hands, or feet
  • rash

This is not a complete list of adverse effects – though these are among the most common. Serious adverse reactions include:

  • difficulty breathing
  • swelling of the extremities
  • unexplained weight gain
  • fast, slow, pounding, or irregular heartbeat
  • chest pain

If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, seek medical attention right away. These are signs of a serious adverse reaction and require immediate medical care.

As with all prescription medication, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with and any medication/ supplements you are currently taking before starting treatment with betaxolol. Betaxolol can interact with other forms of medication and substances, causing potentially serious side effects.

If you are having surgery, you should let any healthcare professionals who are treating you know that you are taking betaxolol.

In addition, let your doctor know if you are pregnant before starting treatment. You should also inform them if you plan on becoming pregnant or become pregnant while taking betaxolol.

Betaxolol comes in the form of an oral tablet which is typically taken once per day. However, you should take the medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of betaxolol without consulting with your provider first. If you begin to experience adverse side effects while taking this medication, like those listed above, inform your provider right away.

Betaxolol should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, away from extreme heat, extreme cold, moisture, and direct light, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Betaxolol is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.

Looking for a prescription? Providers on Sesame can write a prescription – or refill an existing one – during a virtual or in-person visit.
