Dutasteride is an oral alpha reductase inhibitor used to treat symptomatic BPH. It works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into DHT. Lowering DHT levels can help shrink the prostate, improve urine flow, and relieve symptoms like a weak stream, a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying, and the urge to urinate frequently.
Dutasteride is also prescribed off-label to address male pattern hair loss. Reducing DHT in the scalp helps slow hair thinning and may support regrowth over time, though visible results usually take several months of consistent use.
For some men, BPH may also be managed with alpha blockers like alfuzosin, which work differently by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck to improve urine flow. Your healthcare provider can help determine whether dutasteride or another treatment is best for your symptoms.
