Ozempic overview

Ozempic is the brand-name version of the medication semaglutide. Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1s (glucagon-like peptide-1), which mimic a natural hormone that helps your body release insulin and regulate your appetite. Here’s what you need to know about Ozempic and what to expect while taking it.

Patients love Sesame

You can get Ozempic (semaglutide) online through telehealth platforms, where a licensed provider can determine if it’s right for you and write a prescription.

Sesame’s licensed clinicians can prescribe Ozempic for type 2 diabetes through Everyday Rx, a monthly service that helps simplify your monthly medication refills. If your provider prescribes Ozempic, you can choose to have it delivered through an online pharmacy or sent to your local pharmacy for same-day pickup.

Currently, there is no such thing as generic Ozempic. This is because Ozempic is protected by a patent that does not expire until 2031, which means that generic versions of the medication cannot be manufactured until then.

However, there are GLP-1 alternatives to Ozempic called Wegovy and Rybelsus that contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide.

There are also several other GLP-1 medications available that do not contain semaglutide. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Victoza (liraglutide) are both FDA-approved to treat type 2 diabetes, while Zepbound (tirzepatide) and Saxenda (liraglutide) are FDA-approved specifically for weight loss.

If you need assistance with navigating your options and determining the best GLP-1 agonist for type 2 diabetes or weight loss, a Sesame provider can help walk you through your options and medication prices.

Ozempic (semaglutide) works by mimicking the action of GLP-1, a hormone that naturally occurs in the body. GLP-1 helps regulate blood sugar by stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas and slowing down the emptying of the stomach. This leads to reduced blood sugar levels after meals and an increased feeling of fullness, which can help with weight management.

Ozempic also reduces the amount of glucose that your liver is producing. By combining these mechanisms, Ozempic helps lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

It's important to note that Ozempic is not a cure for diabetes but rather a tool to help manage the condition effectively.

It depends on the health condition. Ozempic can improve some health conditions, like type 2 diabetes, obesity, overweight, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

However, your provider will likely advise against starting treatment with Ozempic (semaglutide) if you have:

  • A history of pancreatitis
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Kidney disease
  • Thyroid disorders (like medullary thyroid carcinoma)
  • Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
  • Retinopathy (eye problems)
  • Any digestive disorders, like Crohn’s disease or gastroparesis

Because Ozempic’s effects can vary depending on your health history, it’s crucial to inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or other medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements.

Ozempic can only be prescribed by licensed healthcare professionals who are legally allowed to prescribe medications. This includes medical doctors (MDs), doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs), nurse practitioners (NPs) with prescribing authority, and physician assistants (PAs) with supervising-physician approval (varies by state).

Sesame’s marketplace includes thousands of licensed MDs, DOs, NPs, and PAs who are authorized to prescribe medications like Ozempic when it’s right for the patient.

While Ozempic is not FDA-approved for weight loss, a provider through Sesame’s weight loss program, Success by Sesame, may prescribe Ozempic for weight loss if it’s right for your individual needs.

The Success by Sesame subscription starts as low as $99 per month and includes telehealth visits, unlimited messaging, a prescription for Ozempic or another GLP-1 (if appropriate) and ongoing clinical care from a provider of your choice. The $99 subscription fee does not include the cost of Ozempic, which can range in price depending on your insurance status.

Most providers will start patients at the lowest dose of Ozempic, then gradually increase the dose according to the patient’s tolerance.

Here’s what a standard Ozempic dosing schedule looks like:

  • Starting off: New patients will be prescribed a lower dose of Ozempic (0.25 mg) per week. They will continue this dose for 4 weeks, and your provider will monitor you to see how you’re reacting to Ozempic and if you’re experiencing any side effects, like nausea or constipation.
  • Tapering up: If you’re responding well to Ozempic after the first 4 weeks, your provider will slowly increase your Ozempic dosage over time. This process is called tapering.
  • Maximum dose: Your provider will increase your Ozempic dose until you’ve achieved optimal blood sugar control. For some people, this can happen at 0.5 mg or 1 mg per week. Others might require the maximum Ozempic dosage (2mg per week) to obtain a healthy blood sugar level.

Ultimately, the recommended dosage of Ozempic will vary depending on the individual and their specific needs. Do not discontinue or alter your Ozempic dose without consulting your healthcare provider, as this can increase your risk of side effects.

You should store your Ozempic pens as directed by your healthcare provider or pharmacist in order to maintain its effectiveness.

Typically, Ozempic pens should be stored in the refrigerator between 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C) but can be kept at room temperature (up to 86°F or 30°C) for a maximum of 56 days.

No, Ozempic is available by prescription only. You must consult a licensed healthcare provider to obtain Ozempic.

Please note that all prescriptions, including Ozempic, are at the discretion of your healthcare provider. Sesame cannot guarantee that you will be provided a prescription after a video or in-person appointment.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in three medications: Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus.

Wegovy is manufactured by the same company that makes Ozempic (Novo Nordisk) and is specifically designed to help with weight loss in certain patients. It comes in the form of an injection or an oral pill.

Novo Nordisk also manufactures Rybelsus, which comes in the form of a semaglutide pill instead of an injection. Rybelsus, like Ozempic, is approved to treat type 2 diabetes.

Certain GLP-1 therapies such as semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy), liraglutide (the active ingredient in Saxenda and Victoza), and tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound) may increase the likelihood of developing thyroid gland tumors, including MTC, a type of thyroid cancer. This conclusion is based on studies where laboratory animals given semaglutide, liraglutide, tirzepatide and other GLP-1 medications developed tumors.

However, it is not yet confirmed if these medications pose the same risk to humans. You can find additional information about the risks of FDA-approved medications that contain semaglutide here.

It’s important to inform your doctor if you or any family member has ever had MTC or MEN. If this is the case, your doctor will likely advise against taking GLP-1 medications.

If you are prescribed a GLP-1 medication and exhibit any of the following symptoms, you should contact your provider immediately:

  • A lump or swelling in the neck
  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Severe abdominal pain

Before taking GLP-1 medications, you should also discuss the following with your provider:

Allergies: Inform your doctor and pharmacist of any allergies you have to semaglutide (including under brand names Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy) or similar medications such as tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), dulaglutide (Trulicity), exenatide (Bydureon BCise, Byetta), liraglutide (Saxenda, Victoza, or in Xultophy) and lixisenatide (Adlyxin, or in Soliqua).

Personal and family medical history: Be sure to disclose if you have a history of medical conditions like pancreatitis, diabetic retinopathy, gallbladder disease or kidney disease. Inform your doctor about recent episodes of diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or any inability to consume liquids, which could lead to dehydration.

Current medications and supplements: Provide a comprehensive list of all medicines and supplements you are currently taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products. This is crucial as GLP-1 medications can alter how your body absorbs oral medications.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant soon.

Surgical procedures: In the event of surgery, including dental procedures, inform the medical or dental professional that you are on GLP-1 medication.

It's essential to thoroughly discuss these risks with your healthcare provider and consider your personal and family medical history when deciding whether to use these medications. Your doctor can provide guidance on the best course of action based on your specific health situation.
