Inderal is a brand-name prescription medication primarily prescribed as a treatment for high blood pressure (hypertension). It may also be used as a treatment for irregular heartbeats (arrhythmia), chest pain (angina), severe migraines, pheochromocytoma (tumors on the adrenal gland), hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (a thickened heart muscle), and tremors. It can also reduce the risk of death after a heart attack.

This medication helps relax blood vessels and increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart. Inderal may be prescribed alone or with other medicines to treat hypertension. In addition to medication, you may be prescribed lifestyle changes to help control blood pressure (such as exercise and dietary adjustments).

Inderal is supplied as an oral tablet or extended-release capsule. Extended-release Inderal is called Inderal LA. This medicine contains the drug propranolol, which is available in generic form. Inderal is only available via prescription from a licensed health care provider.

Inderal is primarily prescribed as a treatment for high blood pressure. This medication may be used alone or with other medicines or therapies to lower blood pressure and prevent further complications such as heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.

High blood pressure is a dangerous—potentially fatal—condition in which the heart is met with too much resistance from blocked or narrowed arteries as it tries to pump blood and oxygen around your body. High blood pressure can lead to serious health issues, including heart attacks, heart failure, strokes, and many more complications when not treated. Nearly half of Americans have high blood pressure, and heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.

In addition to its use as a treatment for high blood pressure, Inderal may be prescribed for irregular heartbeats, severe chest pain, migraines, pheochromocytoma, hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, and tremors. It may also increase the likelihood of survival for patients who have just had a heart attack.

Inderal belongs to a class of medications known as beta-blockers. These medications block the transmission of nerve impulses. When stimulated, nerves release epinephrine (also known as adrenaline). Narrowed blood vessels make it difficult to pump blood through the body, leading to increased blood pressure.

By preventing epinephrine’s effect on blood vessels, Inderal keeps blood vessels relaxed and open, reducing blood pressure and minimizing the risk of cardiac conditions such as heart attack, heart failure, and coronary artery disease.

It is important to note that Inderal is not a cure for high blood pressure, though it does help control it. Your treatment may include prescriptions for other medications and lifestyle adjustments such as dietary changes and increased exercise. Before starting any of these lifestyle changes, talk to your doctor to determine the best treatment plan for you.

Inderal has been shown to cause some adverse side effects. Talk to your health care provider if these side effects become severe or do not go away within a few days.

Common symptoms reported while taking Inderal include:

  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Drowsiness
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation

This is not a complete list of adverse reactions. Severe adverse reactions include:

  • Skin rash
  • Hives
  • Itchy skin
  • Difficulty breathing/ shortness of breath
  • Swelling
  • Faintness
  • Weight gain
  • Changes in heartbeat

If you experience any of these reactions, seek medical attention immediately.

As with all prescription medications, inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been diagnosed with and any medications or supplements you currently take before starting treatment with Inderal. Inderal can interact with other medicines and substances, causing potentially serious side effects. Inform your health care provider if you have been diagnosed with diabetes, asthma, lung disease, kidney or liver disease, severe allergies, or thyroid conditions. Before beginning treatment with Inderal, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or are planning on becoming pregnant.

Inderal is commonly prescribed as an oral tablet or extended-release capsule to be taken by mouth. The initial dosage is divided and taken throughout the day based on the dosing schedule ordered by your doctor. The exact dosage will vary depending on the patient's age, body weight, and severity of the condition. Take the medication exactly as your doctor has instructed.

Do not increase your dosage or discontinue the use of Inderal unless ordered to do so by your doctor. If you experience any adverse reactions, contact a health care provider. Your dosage may increase or decrease depending on how well you tolerate the medication.

You should store your medication in a closed container at room temperature, away from extreme heat, extreme cold, moisture, and direct light, and keep it out of the reach of children.
