About Dandruff treatment

Dandruff is a common, non-contagious skin condition that occurs when dead skin cells and oils build up on the scalp, eyebrows or beard, causing itching and flaking. It is a milder form of seborrheic dermatitis.

Symptoms of dandruff include:

  • White or yellow flakes of dead skin in your hair or on your scalp
  • An itchy scalp, eyebrows or beard
  • Redness or crusting on the scalp, eyebrows or beard

Dandruff can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Allergies or sensitivities to certain products (detergents, shampoos)
  • An oily scalp (this can lead to yeast overgrowth, causing flaking and irritation)
  • Dry skin (this can cause flaking and irritation)
  • Chronic skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis
  • Malassezia (a type of yeast that feeds on natural scalp oils and can cause inflammation)

While mild causes of dandruff can typically be treated with over-the-counter (OTC) anti-dandruff shampoos, more severe cases may require medicated shampoos or another prescription treatment. A provider on Sesame can help determine the best dandruff treatment that’s best for you.
There are a number of prescription and over-the-counter treatment options for dandruff. During your Sesame appointment, you can speak with your provider about a treatment plan that’s right for you.
  • Antifungals: These medications prevent the growth of yeast and other fungi that can cause dandruff. Commonly-prescribed antifungal medications include ciclopirox, ketoconazole, fluconazole, clotrimazole, econazole, and terbinafine. These are typically applied topically to the scalp or affected area.
  • Corticosteroids: In some cases, your provider may prescribe a corticosteroid like fluocinolone or clobetasol to reduce scalp inflammation.
  • Selenium sulfide: This anti-infective agent helps get rid of scalp fungi and slows the progression of skin flaking.
  • Over-the-counter (OTC) hair care products: Your provider may recommend Nizoral, Selsun Blue, Head & Shoulders, and other medicated shampoos that contain active ingredients such as tea tree oil, coal tar, zinc pyrithione (ZPT) or salicylic acid.

Dandruff is caused by a buildup of sebum (oil) and dead skin cells on the scalp, eyebrows or beard, which leads to flaking and irritation. Dandruff can occur as a result of oily skin, dry skin, an overgrowth of fungus on the scalp, or even a sensitivity to certain chemicals or fragrances in your hair products.

If you’re not sure what’s triggering your dandruff, book an in-person or online skin consult with a licensed healthcare provider. They can help you identify the cause of your symptoms and come up with a personalized treatment plan.

Milder cases of dandruff typically respond well to over-the-counter dandruff shampoos, but more severe cases of flaking and irritation may require prescription treatment.

To find out which dandruff treatment is best for you, talk with a licensed medical provider. They can offer personalized medical advice catered to your needs and prescribe medication if appropriate.

Yes. If deemed clinically appropriate, an online doctor or provider on Sesame can prescribe medication and other treatments for dandruff symptoms like flaking, itching, or an oily scalp. Any dandruff prescriptions will be sent to a pharmacy of your choice for pickup.

Sesame also offers convenient, online dandruff treatment through Skincare Rx, a $59 monthly subscription that includes video consults with a provider of your choice, messaging & prescriptions for dandruff shampoo if appropriate.

No. Sesame does not accept insurance to keep prices low and transparent – the upfront price you see next to your provider’s name is the price you pay!

However, you can pay for your online visit using your Health Savings Account (HSA) card or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) card if you have one.

If you do have insurance and are prescribed medication during your appointment, your prescription may be covered depending on your plan.

You will also receive a prescription savings card from Sesame if medication is prescribed. The prescription savings card is often cheaper than a co-pay on your prescription, so we recommend comparing your insurance co-pay to the savings card price before filling your prescription.

Yes! Sesame is available to all patients regardless of insurance status. Simply browse Sesame providers, select a price and an appointment time slot that works for you, and get the care you need without hidden fees or surprise bills.
