About Rosacea treatment

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that can cause redness, visible blood vessels, and acne-like bumps, typically on facial areas like the cheeks, nose and forehead.

Common symptoms of rosacea include:

  • Facial redness (erythema)
  • Visible blood vessels (telangiectasia)
  • Red bumps and/or pimples
  • Dryness

While the exact causes of rosacea aren’t known, both your medical history and your environment can impact flare-ups. Common triggers include cold weather, spicy foods, alcohol, sun exposure, or even health conditions like high blood pressure.

Growing evidence also suggests that Demodex mites (tiny organisms that live on your skin) can increase your likelihood of developing rosacea.

The best treatment for rosacea for you can depend on a range of factors. During your Sesame appointment, you can speak with your provider about the best option for you.
  • Antibiotics: If you’re prone to developing lesions or papules (pus-filled bumps or pimples), your provider may prescribe an antibiotic like metronidazole (Metrogel, Rozex), minocycline (Minocin) or doxycycline (Oracea, Vibramycin, Monodox) to treat your symptoms. These may be taken orally or applied topically, depending on the medication.
  • Azelaic acid: Azelaic acid (Azelex) is a topical treatment that can help reduce redness and pimples caused by rosacea.
  • Brimonidine: Brimonidine (Mirvaso) is often prescribed as a topical gel to reduce facial redness from rosacea.
  • Isotretinoin: Isotretinoin (Accutane) is an oral medication that is sometimes prescribed to treat severe rosacea. It requires close monitoring from a healthcare provider due to the risk of serious side effects.
  • Ivermectin: Ivermectin (Soolantra) is a topical treatment prescribed for moderate to severe rosacea. It can reduce lesions and redness.
  • Laser treatment: Laser therapy can reduce the appearance of rosacea by targeting and sealing up inflamed blood vessels.
  • Over-the-counter (OTC) skin care products: Your provider may recommend gentle, fragrance-free OTC lotions or cleansers for your rosacea, along with high-SPF sunscreens that limit your skin’s sun exposure.
