How to take albuterol
Albuterol is available in several forms, including metered-dose inhalers (aerosol or dry powder inhalers), nebulizer solutions, oral tablets, and syrup. Most adults use an inhaler or nebulizer for fast relief of asthma or bronchospasm symptoms.
The typical starting dose for adults is 2 inhalations every 4-6 hours as needed with a metered-dose inhaler, or 2.5 mg of nebulizer solution every 6-8 hours. For preventing exercise-induced bronchospasm, adults usually take 2 inhalations 15-30 minutes before physical activity. Children under 4 years require individualized dosing.
Some medications and supplements can interact with albuterol, including beta-blockers, diuretics, digoxin, other bronchodilators, MAO inhibitors, and tricyclic antidepressants.
You should also avoid asthma triggers that may worsen bronchospasms, such as cigarette smoke or strong airborne irritants. Before starting albuterol, tell your healthcare provider about any existing conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, seizure disorders, diabetes, thyroid problems, kidney disease, or allergies to albuterol.
Always follow your provider’s instructions carefully and use the medication only as prescribed. Make sure you know how to use your inhaler or nebulizer correctly for the best results and improved respiratory health.
