Ciclopirox topical solution is a liquid antifungal medication that you apply directly to the area with a fungal infection. The solution should be applied to the entire nail and surrounding areas at bedtime for 7 days. After 7 days, remove the solution with rubbing alcohol and trim or file nails. The procedure should be repeated as directed by your provider.

Depending on your symptoms, your clinician may prescribe other forms of ciclopirox, like creams, gels, or shampoos for skin infections like ringworm or dandruff.

Ciclopirox topical solution works by stopping nail fungus from growing, so the infection clears gradually. Over time, you should notice your nail becoming less thick, discolored, and brittle.
The generic name for Penlac is ciclopirox. It is available as an 8% ciclopirox solution for nail treatment.

There are no drug interactions associated with ciclopirox. You should still tell your provider about everything you're currently using, including:

  • Prescription and over-the-counter medications
  • Vitamins and nutritional supplements
  • Herbal products

Follow these storage guidelines to keep ciclopirox effective and safe:

  • Store ciclopirox at room temperature between 59°F and 86°F (15°C and 30°C)
  • Keep your ciclopirox in its original bottle, away from light
  • Keep it tightly closed and safely away from children
  • Ciclopirox is flammable, so keep it away from heat or open flames, including cigarettes

If you forget to apply your ciclopirox as scheduled, apply it as soon as you remember.

If it's almost time for your next application, skip the missed one and continue with your prescribed schedule.

Don't apply extra ciclopirox to make up for a missed dose.

Before starting ciclopirox, talk to your provider about your medical history. Be sure to tell them if you:

  • Are allergic to ciclopirox or any other medications
  • Have a condition that affects your immune system, such as HIV/AIDS or a history of organ transplant
  • Have diabetes or diabetic neuropathy (numbness in your hands or feet)—this might mean you need a different nail management plan
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding

Ciclopirox is designed for external use on your nails and the skin immediately around them. It generally stays where you apply it, and very little (less than 5%) is absorbed into your body.

If you accidentally swallow your ciclopirox or notice unusual symptoms, contact your clinician or a poison control center right away.

You can buy ciclopirox at online pharmacies like BlinkRx or Amazon Pharmacy with a valid prescription from a licensed provider on Sesame.

Book a telehealth visit with a DO, NP, or certified provider to find out if ciclopirox is right for your infection and get an Rx if appropriate.

You can't buy ciclopirox over the counter, but you can get a same-day online prescription through a telehealth call if your provider deems it clinically appropriate.

Providers on Sesame can evaluate your symptoms via virtual visit and, if needed, send a prescription or refill to a pharmacy near you for fast pickup.

You can get a ciclopirox prescription or refill visit 24/7 with a provider on Sesame.

During your virtual call, your clinician will assess your symptoms and, if appropriate, issue a same-day Rx.

Depending on the type and severity of your infection, your provider may prescribe other antifungal medications, including:

  • Clotrimazole (generic for Lotrimin)
  • Fluconazole (generic for Diflucan)
  • Griseofulvin (generic for Fulvicin)
  • Itraconazole (generic for Sporanox)
  • Ketoconazole (generic for Nizoral)
  • Nystatin (generic for Nystop)

Talk to your provider to find the most effective option for your specific situation.
