Frequently asked questions about dutasteride

Medically reviewed by:
Jessica Swirble, PharmD

Dutasteride is a prescription medication used to treat two different conditions:

1. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Dutasteride is prescribed to manage the symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland, a condition known as BPH. It helps reduce the size of the prostate and improve urinary symptoms associated with BPH. It may be prescribed alone or with tamsulosin (Flomax).

2. Male Pattern Baldness: Dutasteride also has an off-label use for treating male pattern baldness, a condition characterized by hair loss on the scalp.

Dutasteride is available in its generic form or under the brand name Avodart.

This medication is only available with a prescription, meaning you need a written prescription from a licensed healthcare provider to purchase it.

Dutasteride is primarily prescribed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH): BPH is an enlargement of the prostate. A man’s risk of developing BPH increases with age. BPH only causes symptoms in about half of diagnosed cases and does not lead to prostate cancer.

Symptoms of BPH include:

  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Feeling like your bladder is not emptied after urination
  • Dribbling after urination
  • Frequent urination at night
  • Weak urinary stream
  • Urgency

In addition to its use in treating BPH, some healthcare providers prescribe dutasteride for its off-label use as a treatment for male pattern baldness.

Male pattern hair loss (or male pattern baldness) is the most common type of hair loss in men. Androgenetic alopecia/ androgenic alopecia (the interchangeable medical term for male pattern hair loss) is hereditary and occurs gradually as men grow older. If you have a family history of receding hairlines or baldness, you will likely experience male pattern hair loss at some point.

Dutasteride is classified as a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. These drugs work by inhibiting the action of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is involved in the growth of the prostate gland and hair loss in male pattern baldness. By reducing DHT levels, dutasteride helps shrink the prostate and promote hair regrowth.

Dutasteride may cause some side effects.

Mild side effects reported with dutasteride use include:

  • Decreased libido (interest in sex)
  • Erectile dysfunction (difficulty getting or maintaining an erection)
  • Ejaculation disorders (such as decreased semen volume)

More serious side effects include:

  • Breast tenderness or enlargement
  • Swelling in the face, tongue, or throat
  • Skin irritation
  • Breathing problems

If you experience severe or persistent side effects or are concerned about using this medication, consult a health care provider.

Studies have shown that dutasteride can increase your risk of developing breast cancer and high-grade prostate cancer, which spreads and grows more rapidly than other types of prostate cancer.

Before using dutasteride, inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or other medications you are taking. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements, as they may interact with dutasteride.

You should tell your healthcare provider if you are taking:

Ketoconazole: Ketoconazole, an antifungal medication, may increase the levels of dutasteride in the bloodstream. Your healthcare provider may adjust your dutasteride dosage if you are taking ketoconazole.

CYP3A4 Inhibitors: Some medications that inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes in the liver, such as ritonavir and verapamil, may increase dutasteride levels in the blood.

Calcium Channel Blockers: Certain calcium channel blockers like diltiazem may interact with dutasteride, potentially affecting metabolism.

Grapefruit Juice: Consuming grapefruit juice may interact with dutasteride, affecting its absorption and effectiveness.

Antivirals and antibiotics: Can increase the effect of dutasteride.

Dutasteride is not typically recommended for women or children, especially pregnant women, as it can cause harm to a developing fetus. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should avoid contact with dutasteride capsules.

The recommended dosage of dutasteride may vary depending on the condition being treated. For BPH and male pattern baldness, the typical starting dose is 0.5 mg (one capsule) taken orally once daily.

Do not discontinue or increase your dutasteride dosage without consulting your doctor first.

Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regularly scheduled amount. Do not take a double dose of dutasteride.

Store this medication in its original container at room temperature, away from excessive heat or moisture. Keep the medication out of the reach of children and ensure that the bottle cap is securely closed.

Dutasteride is currently only available via prescription. A licensed healthcare provider must authorize the use of this drug.
