Risperidone side effects
When starting risperidone, some mild side effects are common. These may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, dry mouth, changes in appetite or weight, drowsiness, or trouble sleeping.
Risperidone can also cause movement-related side effects, called extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS), like muscle stiffness, tremors, or restlessness. Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a rare but serious long-term movement issue. It may cause involuntary movements, like grimacing or uncontrolled hand or finger motions. In rare cases, risperidone may raise prolactin levels, a hormone that can affect breast tissue or menstrual cycles.
Children and teens may experience side effects differently. Common reactions include sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, stomach pain, or changes in muscle movement. Less common effects include appetite changes, restlessness, or mild anxiety.
Seek medical help immediately if you notice a high fever, stiff muscles, confusion, fast or irregular heartbeat, seizures, numbness or weakness, trouble speaking, vision changes, difficulty swallowing, very high blood sugar, or signs of a severe allergic reaction, like swelling of the face, lips, or throat. If even mild side effects become bothersome to you, call your doctor.
