How to use spironolactone
Spironolactone is usually taken orally in tablet form, with or without food, once or twice daily depending on your healthcare provider’s instructions. Dosages can vary, typically ranging from 25-100 mg per day, depending on the condition being treated.
Take it at the same time each day, and follow your provider’s guidance closely. Do not change treatment plans or stop your dose without consulting your doctor first.
Because spironolactone affects salt and water balance in the body, some people may notice increased urination. Your provider may also recommend lifestyle measures, such as reducing sodium intake and exercising regularly, to help optimize results.
Avoid potassium-based salt substitutes and excessive potassium-rich foods unless advised, as spironolactone can increase potassium levels. Monitor for symptoms of high potassium, such as muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, weakness, or confusion.
Be cautious with medications and supplements that may interact with spironolactone, including ACE inhibitors, ARBs, NSAIDs, diuretics, digoxin, lithium, and certain herbal supplements. People with kidney or liver disease, high potassium levels, Addison’s disease, or other electrolyte imbalances should not take spironolactone.
