Coreg is a brand-name prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and moderate-to-severe heart failure. It is also used to improve the chances of survival after a heart attack.

High blood pressure is a common but serious condition that affects nearly half of all Americans. If left untreated, high blood pressure can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of the body. This can lead to severe complications like heart disease, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, and vision loss.

Coreg is prescribed as an oral tablet that may be used in conjunction with other forms of medication. In addition, your health care provider may prescribe lifestyle changes like a heart-healthy diet low in fat and salt, reduced alcohol use, and regular exercise.

Doctors prescribe Coreg for mild to severe heart failure and high blood pressure (hypertension).

High blood pressure is a dangerous – potentially fatal – condition in which the heart is met with too much resistance from blocked or narrowed arteries as it tries to pump blood and oxygen around your body. High blood pressure can lead to serious health issues, including heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and many more complications when not treated. Nearly half of Americans have high blood pressure, and heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.

Coreg may be administered to patients immediately after a heart attack to reduce mortality and improve recovery outcomes.

Coreg is a brand-name prescription medication. Carvedilol belongs to a class of beta-blockers. Hypertension occurs when your blood exerts too much force against your artery walls. This can lead to several adverse effects.

Beta-blockers like carvedilol work by relaxing and opening up blood vessels, reducing the force with which blood pushes against them, and lowering your overall blood pressure. They do this by blocking the action of certain natural substances in your body, such as epinephrine, that cause the heart to beat more forcefully.

Coreg has been shown to cause some side effects. Talk to your health care provider if these mild reactions do not go away within a few days.

Common side effects reported from Coreg use include:
Dizziness
Fatigue
Lightheadedness
Diarrhea
Headache
Nausea and vomiting
Vision changes
Joint pain
Insomnia
Cough
Dry eyes
Numbness, burning, or tingling in the arms or legs

This is not a complete list of adverse reactions caused by Coreg. Call your doctor immediately if you experience difficulty breathing or swallowing; fainting; weight gain; chest pain; changes in heartbeat; skin rash; hives; or swelling of arms, feet, ankles, and legs. Coreg has also caused elevated blood sugar levels. Call your doctor immediately if you have extreme thirst or hunger, frequent urination, weakness, or blurred vision.

As with all prescription medications, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with and any medication/ supplements you are currently taking before taking Coreg. Coreg can interact with other forms of medication, causing potentially serious side effects. Specifically, inform your health care provider if you have or have had liver or kidney disease, diabetes, pheochromocytoma (an adrenal gland tumor), or are taking any blood thinning medication. Finally, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant before starting treatment with this medication.

Coreg is commonly administered as an oral tablet (pill). The specific dosage of medication prescribed will depend on the patient's age and the severity of the condition requiring treatment.

Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of Coreg without consulting your doctor first. Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

Coreg is currently only available via prescription, which means a licensed health care provider must authorize the use of this drug.
