How to take dabigatran
Dabigatran comes as oral capsules, usually taken twice daily with or without food. Swallow the capsules whole. Do not crush, chew, or open them. Taking your doses at the same times each day helps the medication work effectively. (Small children may be prescribed dabigatran as oral pellets, which can be mixed with soft food or apple juice.)
Your provider will choose the right dosage based on your condition, kidney function, and other medications. For adults with atrial fibrillation, common doses range from 75 mg to 150 mg twice daily, but your provider may adjust the amount to meet your specific needs.
Because dabigatran affects blood clotting, it is important to tell your provider if you have kidney or liver problems, a history of bleeding disorders, or recent surgery. You should also mention if you have antiphospholipid syndrome or if you’ve had an epidural, spinal, or brain procedure.
Dabigatran is not suitable for everyone. It should not be taken if you have active bleeding, certain mechanical heart valves, or a known allergy to dabigatran etexilate. If you cannot swallow capsules or do not have quick access to medical care in case of bleeding, your provider may recommend something else for you.
Always review all prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, and supplements with your provider or pharmacist to avoid drug interactions. Medications such as NSAIDs, aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin, dronedarone, apixaban, or rifampin can increase your risk of bleeding or affect how dabigatran works.
