Medically reviewed by:Dr. Allison Edwards, MD

Ospemifene is used to treat moderate-to-severe painful sex (dyspareunia) caused by vaginal atrophy after menopause. Vaginal atrophy happens when your estrogen levels drop (this drop occurs naturally as you age). Lower estrogen levels can dry out the vaginal walls, making intercourse more painful.

Ospemifene can't treat or reverse menopause itself, but it can help with symptoms such as:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Burning or itching
  • Pain during sex

After you swallow the tablet, ospemifene travels through your bloodstream and acts on the vaginal tissues. It helps rebuild and thicken the vaginal lining, making it healthier and more moisturized. This can reduce pain and dryness during sex.

Before starting ospemifene, let your provider know if you have or have ever had:

  • Breast cancer, endometrial cancer, or other hormone-sensitive cancers
  • A history of blood clots or stroke
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Liver disease

You should not take ospemifene if you are pregnant or may become pregnant, as it may harm an unborn baby.

The usual dose for ospemifene is 60 mg once a day taken by mouth with food (this helps your body absorb it better). Try to take it around the same time every day.

No, ospemifene is only available with a prescription. A licensed healthcare provider needs to determine if it’s right for you.

If you’re considering ospemifene, book an online doctor appointment on Sesame to see if it’s right for you. If prescribed, your provider can send your prescription to your preferred pharmacy for pickup.
