Tranexamic acid is available as the generic form of Lysteda. The original branded Lysteda product is no longer widely marketed, but generic versions of tranexamic acid are commonly prescribed.
Tranexamic acid is prescribed to manage heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia). It helps reduce the amount and duration of bleeding, making periods lighter and more manageable.
Tranexamic acid is not designed to relieve menstrual cramps. It targets heavy bleeding rather than pain. For cramps, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen are usually recommended, but talk with your healthcare provider before combining medications.

Studies suggest tranexamic acid may be useful off-label for treating melasma and other types of hyperpigmentation. Dermatologists sometimes prescribe it in topical form. Oral tranexamic acid is the only FDA-approved version, though, and only for heavy menstrual bleeding.

For skin concerns, your provider may also discuss other treatments such as tretinoin or combination therapies. If you have concerns about melasma, talk to your Sesame provider about melasma treatment options that could work for you.

Before starting tranexamic acid for heavy periods, it’s important to share your medical history with your provider. Tell them about any existing conditions, especially kidney problems or blood-clotting disorders.

Let your provider know about all the medicines you take, including prescription drugs, low-dose aspirin, warfarin, or fever reducers. Some drugs can interact with tranexamic acid and affect blood clotting.

Do not take tranexamic acid if you have a history of blood clots or if you have other conditions that affect clotting. Your provider may also recommend kidney tests or other monitoring before starting this drug.

Keep tranexamic acid at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Store it in its original container and out of reach of children and pets. Follow all pharmacist instructions and medicine labels for additional storage information.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not take two doses at the same time.
Taking more tranexamic acid than prescribed can increase your risk of blood clots or other side effects. If you accidentally take too much, contact your healthcare provider or a local poison control center for medical help immediately.

Tranexamic acid pills are currently only available via prescription. A licensed healthcare provider must authorize the use of this drug.

Providers on Sesame can write you a prescription (or refill) during a virtual or in-person visit. You can arrange for same-day pickup at your pharmacy, depending on the medication.

Note that all prescriptions are at the discretion of your healthcare provider. Sesame cannot guarantee that you will be provided a prescription after a video or in-person appointment. Providers on Sesame are unable to prescribe controlled substances.

The first step is to choose a licensed provider through Sesame and schedule a secure video visit at a time that works for you. During the visit, your provider will review your menstrual history, symptoms, and treatment goals to decide if tranexamic acid is right for you.

If it is, they can send a prescription directly to your preferred pharmacy for convenient pickup.

In addition to tranexamic acid, Sesame providers can prescribe other medications to help manage heavy or prolonged periods. Hormonal options like progesterone, medroxyprogesterone, or combined oral contraceptives (levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol) can help regulate your cycle and reduce excessive bleeding. Keep in mind that their primary purpose is to support overall hormonal balance and reproductive health.

During your video visit, your provider will review your patient information, discuss your symptoms, and determine which treatment or combination of treatments might work best for you.
