How to take escitalopram (Lexapro) for the best results
Escitalopram (Lexapro) is available as a generic, escitalopram, and comes as an oral tablet and an oral solution. The typical starting dose can vary depending on your age, health conditions, and other medications that you take.
For anxiety and depressive disorders, the usual starting dose of escitalopram is 5 to 10 mg once daily. Your prescriber may increase your dosage depending on your response to the medication.
Escitalopram should be taken at the same time each day, either every morning or every evening. It can be taken with or without food.
Do not increase your dosage or discontinue the use of escitalopram unless ordered to do so by your doctor. Suddenly stopping escitalopram can lead to withdrawal symptoms, including headache, nausea, dizziness, confusion, insomnia, irritability, and diarrhea. Your prescriber will gradually decrease your escitalopram dosage if you need to discontinue the medication.
Contact your healthcare provider with any questions, dosage concerns, or bothersome side effects. If you develop any severe symptoms or signs of an allergic reaction, seek medical help right away.
