Frequently asked questions about dulaglutide (generic Trulicity)

Medically reviewed by:
Dr. Allison Edwards, Medical Director

Dulaglutide (generic Trulicity) is a prescription drug used to treat type 2 diabetes when diet, exercise, and other forms of medication do not adequately control blood sugar levels. Dulaglutide increases the pancreas’ production of insulin to get your type 2 diabetes under control. Not only does dulaglutide help manage blood sugar levels, but it can also help patients with type 2 diabetes reduce their risk of heart attack, stroke, and death.

Dulaglutide is prescribed in conjunction with other treatment measures such as exercise and dietary changes to help patients lose weight and prevent serious complications caused by diabetes.

Dulaglutide is the active ingredient in Trulicity, a brand-name medication. There is currently no generic version of Trulicity.

Dulaglutide is prescribed as a treatment for type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body does not properly process food into energy. When we eat food (particularly carbs) the body turns it into glucose (sugar), the substance our body uses as energy. Central to this process is insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas to help cells absorb glucose. In people with diabetes, the body either does not produce enough insulin or uses it inefficiently. This causes the blood sugar, or blood glucose levels, to either get too high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia).

Dulaglutide is not used to treat type 1 diabetes – an autoimmune condition in which your body attacks your pancreas with antibodies causing the organ to stop producing insulin. If you have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, your health care provider will prescribe a different form of medication and therapy for you.

Dulaglutide is classified as an incretin mimetic, a category of antidiabetes medication that acts like incretin hormones (hormones released by the pancreas to stimulate a decrease in blood glucose levels). Dulaglutide binds to incretin receptors, performing the same action as incretin hormones – essentially stimulating the release of glucose-dependent insulin. This helps your body metabolize blood sugar, which keeps glucose levels in check.

Dulaglutide has been shown to cause some mild side effects. Talk to your health care provider if these adverse effects do not go away within a few days.

Common side effects reported while taking dulaglutide include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Heartburn
  • Fatigue
  • Changes in appetite

This is not a complete list of possible adverse effects.

If you experience an unexplained rash, swelling, stomach pain, difficulty breathing, behavior or mood changes, depression, or fainting while taking dulaglutide, seek medical attention immediately. These are early signs of a potentially serious adverse reaction to the medication reaction.

Talk to your health care provider about any medication you are currently taking, or any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with before starting treatment with dulaglutide.

Dulaglutide is administered as a subcutaneous injection (a shot injected into the stomach, thighs, or upper arm). Talk to your doctor about the best method for application, as well as how to store the medication.

For adults and children over the age of 12, .75mg of dulaglutide should be injected under the skin once a week. This dosage may be adjusted by your health care provider as needed.

Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of dulaglutide without consulting your doctor first. Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

Dulaglutide is currently only supplied as an active ingredient in Trulicty, a brand-name medication. Trulicity is only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
