Product Overview

Glipizide ER (generic Glucotrol XL)

  • What is glipizide ER (generic Glucotrol XL)?
Glipizide ER (generic Glucotrol XL) is the extended release version of Glipizide - a prescription drug used to treat type 2 diabetes. Glipizide decreases your body’s blood glucose level and increases its response to the hormone insulin to get your type 2 diabetes under control. Glipizide ER releases the drug more gradually than the instant release formulation. This provides a steadier supply of the medication to your bloodstream and allows you to take it less frequently.

  • What are the most common side effects of glipizide ER?
While adverse side effects are rare, patients taken Glipizide ER have experienced diarrhea, gas, jitters, dizziness, shaking, itchy skin, rashes, and hives.

Rarely, more serious side effects may occur, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, light-colored stools, pain in the upper right part of the stomach, unusual bruising or bleeding, fever, and sore throat.

This is not a complete list of side effects. If you’re concerned about side effects from taking glipizide ER, contact your doctor directly.

Frequently asked questions about glipizide ER

What is glipizide ER?

Glipizide ER (generic Glucotrol XL) is the extended release version of Glipizide - a prescription drug used to treat type 2 diabetes. Glipizide decreases your body’s blood glucose level and increases its response to the hormone insulin to get your type 2 diabetes under control. Glipizide ER releases the drug more gradually than the instant release formulation. This provides a steadier supply of the medication to your bloodstream and allows you to take it less frequently.

Nearly 1 in 10 Americans has diabetes, a condition characterized by elevated levels of glucose - or sugar - in the blood. If left untreated, elevated glucose levels can wreak havoc on your body, causing kidney damage, eye problems, sexual dysfunction, and more. Doctors prescribe drugs like metformin to help keep patients’ blood glucose - and their diabetes symptoms - in check.

What is glipizide ER used to treat?

Glipizide ER is used to treat type 2 diabetes - the form of diabetes in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or builds a resistance to it.

Insulin is a hormone that plays a role in the way your body takes up and uses sugar for energy. When your body does not produce enough insulin, sugar builds up in the blood, leading to serious problems like kidney problems, eye problems, heart disease, nerve damage, loss of limbs, and even death.

Glipizide ER cannot be used to treat type 1 diabetes, a condition in which the body produces little to no insulin at all.

It is important to note that Glipizide ER is meant to work alongside diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes to lower your blood glucose levels and bring your diabetes under control.

How does glipizide ER work?

Glipizide ER is a member of the sulfonylurea class of medications. These drugs stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin, a hormone that regulates your blood sugar. Glipizide ER also helps the body utilize insulin more efficiently, helping to better regulate your blood glucose levels.

What are the most common side effects of glipizide ER?

It is important to know that Glipizide ER causes changes in your blood sugar, and to understand the symptoms related to these changes. Side effects that can occur while using glipizide ER include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Feeling jittery
  • Dizziness
  • Uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body
  • Red or itchy skin
  • Rash
  • Hives
  • Blisters

Call your doctor immediately if any of the following symptoms occur while taking glipizide ER:

  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Light-colored stools
  • Dark urine
  • Pain in the upper right part of the stomach
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Fever
  • Sore throat

If you continue to experience any side effects including discomfort, contact your doctor or health care provider. Your doctor will decide if you should continue to use this medication.

This is not a complete list of glipizide ER side effects. To learn more about adverse reactions you may encounter while taking glipizide ER, please visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage.

How long does it take for glipizide ER to work?

Not too long. Glipizide ER has 100% bioavailability after a single oral dose. It will begin to release into your bloodstream 2 to 3 hours after taking it, and will reach maximum concentrations within 6 to 12 hours after dosing. The concentration levels will then remain constant throughout the 24 hour intervals in subsequent doses.

What is the typical starting dose of glipizide ER?

The typical starting dose for most patients is 5 mg daily, which should be taken orally with your first meal. Elderly patients or patients with liver disease may start on a lower dose of 2.5 mg. Based on how your body responds, your doctor may increase your dosage to a maximum daily dose of 20 mg.

Your dose may vary. Take Glipizide only as instructed by your doctor or per the instructions on the packaging label.
