The most common side effects of Jardiance include urinary tract infections, genital yeast infections, and increased urination. Jardiance removes excess sugar through the urine, which increases the risk of these side effects.
Other side effects include:
- Low blood sugar
- High cholesterol
- Nausea
- Low blood pressure upon standing
- Dehydration
- Constipation
- Increased thirst
- Weight loss
Jardiance can increase the risk of severe infections, including genitourinary fungal infections, severe urinary tract infections that cause sepsis (urosepsis), and necrotizing fasciitis (Fournier gangrene).
Jardiance can also increase the risk of ketoacidosis, which is high levels of ketones in the blood. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a life-threatening medical emergency. Seek immediate care if you have any of the following symptoms or think you have ketoacidosis:
- Vomiting
- Rapid breathing or difficulty breathing
- Fruity-smelling breath
- Confusion
- Severe fatigue
- Muscle aches or stiffness
- High blood sugar
- High ketones in the urine
Certain people are at an increased risk of ketoacidosis, including:
- People with alcohol use disorder
- Those with a history of pancreatitis
- People with diabetes who use insulin
- Recent surgery, heart attack, stroke, or severe infection
- People on a ketogenic diet
