Glimepiride (generic for Amaryl) is a prescription drug used to treat Type 2 diabetes. Developed by Sanofi-Aventis, glimepiride is a second-generation sulfonylurea drug that works by increasing the release of insulin by the pancreas in response to increased glucose levels in the blood.

Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which the body’s cells are partially or completely unresponsive to insulin, which is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas to regulate the metabolism of sugars and fats in the body.

Looking for a safe, effective way to keep your diabetes under control? Talk to your doctor about whether glimepiride may be right for you.

Glimepiride is used to treat type 2 diabetes. Doctors do not prescribe this drug to treat diabetic ketoacidosis and type 1 diabetes.

Glimepiride works by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin, which helps control high blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Like many diabetes medications, glimepiride is most effective when used alongside diet, exercise, and weight loss.

Glimepiride may be used alone or in combination with other oral anti-diabetic drugs. Research shows that the drug is better at lowering blood sugar levels when used in combination with other oral anti-diabetic drugs.

While adverse reactions to glimepiride are uncommon, some patients who take the drug may experience mild side effects, including headache, lack of energy, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, stomach pain, trouble sleeping, bloating, loss of appetite, weight gain, skin rash, muscle pain, itching, increased urination, excessive sweating, and fever.

Rare, more serious adverse effects have also been known to occur. If you are concerned that glimepiride may be causing you to experience any number of adverse side effects, contact your doctor or clinician.

This is not a complete list of side effects. For more information on adverse effects you may experience while taking glimepiride, please visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage.

It usually takes glimepiride about 2-3 hours for glimepiride to begin to reduce your blood sugar levels. You may not feel an immediate difference after taking glimepiride, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t working. Taking glimepiride can help you reduce your chances of type 2 diabetes-related health problems in the future by keeping your blood sugar levels stable.

The recommended starting dose of glimepiride is between 1 and 2 mg once a day. It should be taken daily with your first main meal of the day. Your doctor will determine if increasing the dosage is right for you, and should not happen more often than every 1 to 2 weeks. Your doctor may change the dose depending on the glycemic response to the drug. The maximum dosage is recommended at 8 mg per day.

Glimepiride is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
