How to take trazodone
Trazodone comes in oral tablet form, typically 50 mg, 100 mg, or 150 mg. Your provider will determine the right dose based on your condition, age, medical history, and response to treatment.
For depression, adults often start at 150 mg per day in divided doses, with gradual increases up to a maximum of 400 mg if needed. For sleep, lower doses of 25-50 mg at bedtime are commonly used.
Do not stop trazodone suddenly or change your dose without guidance. This can cause withdrawal symptoms or a return of your depression or insomnia. Avoid alcohol and grapefruit while taking trazodone, and be cautious when driving or operating machinery due to drowsiness effects.
Trazodone may not be right for everyone. Tell your provider if you have a history of bipolar disorder (mood disorder with mania and depression), seizures, hypokalemia (low potassium), hypomagnesemia (low magnesium), heart problems, liver or kidney disease, or glaucoma.
If you have questions about dosing or safety, your doctor can help. You can book an online appointment through Sesame to discuss your needs and get a prescription if appropriate.
